FluoroFusion R-454B: Why Purity Specs Matter on Your First Charge
You cracked open a cylinder of R-454B on a virgin system startup and now the numbers are off. Before you chase a leak or second-guess your recovery, check what was in that cylinder.
Not all refrigerant is manufactured equal. On an A2L system with tight factory charge tolerances, what's on the spec sheet has real consequences.

AHRI-700 Is the Baseline, Not a Marketing Claim
AHRI-700 defines the purity floor for refrigerants sold in the US. It sets limits on moisture, acidity, high-boiling residue, non-condensables, and blend composition. FluoroFusion's R-454B meets AHRI-700 on every production batch — that's not optional for a serious refrigerant supplier, but it's worth confirming before you buy from anyone.
The spec sheet documents it. If a supplier can't hand you one, move on.
Moisture Content: Small Number, Big Problem
AHRI-700 caps moisture in R-454B at 10 ppm by weight. That sounds trivially small. It isn't. Moisture in an A2L system reacts with POE oil and trace HF to form acids. Those acids attack copper, motor windings, and bearing surfaces. A compressor warranty claim on a system that's six months old often traces back to contaminated refrigerant or a wet cylinder.
FluoroFusion publishes actual moisture values on their certificate of analysis, not just a pass/fail. That number matters when you're documenting a startup.
Non-Condensables and Why Your Head Pressure Is Lying to You
Non-condensables — air, nitrogen carryover, other gases — don't condense in the condenser. They sit in the high side and drive up head pressure artificially. On R-454B, which already runs at different pressure-temperature relationships than R-410A, even a small non-condensable load will skew your PT readings and make diagnosis harder than it needs to be.
AHRI-700 sets the non-condensable limit at 1.5% by volume. FluoroFusion's quality controls target well below that threshold.
Blend Composition Drift
R-454B is a zeotropic blend of R-32 and R-1234yf. The GWP and A2L safety classification depend on the ratio holding. If the blend drifts outside spec, you're not charging what the equipment manufacturer called for — and you're outside the certification basis of that system. FluoroFusion's production process includes blend verification before cylinders are sealed.
Cylinder Sizing: Match the Job
FluoroFusion R-454B is available in 20 lb cylinders for service work and larger containers for new construction and multi-unit installations. For a single split system startup, a 20 lb cylinder keeps the job clean. For tract work or commercial installations, larger sizing reduces handling and minimizes the number of cylinder changeovers mid-charge.
Order the size that fits the work, not the one that was in stock somewhere else.
The Spec Sheet Is Part of Your Documentation
On a new R-454B system, your startup paperwork should include the refrigerant batch number and certificate of analysis. Equipment manufacturers are already tightening warranty requirements around refrigerant quality. Having FluoroFusion's COA on file costs you nothing and protects you if a compressor goes down later.
