A2L Handling Rules That Are Already in Effect — and What's Still Coming
A2L refrigerants are no longer a future concern. Some of the rules governing how you handle them are enforceable right now, and the gap between what technicians think is coming versus what is already here is getting people caught off guard.

What Is Already Enforceable
UL 2988 certification requirements for A2L recovery equipment are already in play. If you are recovering R-32, R-454B, R-410A blends, or any other A2L refrigerant from equipment, your recovery machine needs to be rated for it. Running an uncertified machine is not a gray area.
New residential and light commercial equipment shipped with A2L refrigerants has been rolling out since 2025 model year changeovers. That means you are likely already encountering systems in the field charged with R-454B or R-32. The handling obligations start the moment you open that system.
IMPOrtant for Leak Repair Work
EPA Section 608 venting prohibitions apply to A2L refrigerants the same as HFCs. These are mildly flammable refrigerants with a global warming potential the AIM Act is specifically targeting. Intentional venting is already a violation. That has not changed and will not change.
Your nitrogen purge procedures and leak detection habits need to be dialed in now, not when new rules force the issue.
What Is Still Rolling Out
ASHRAE 15-2022 and ASHRAE 34 code adoptions are happening at the state and local level on different schedules. Refrigerant detector requirements, machinery room thresholds, and ventilation specs will vary by jurisdiction until model codes propagate more uniformly. Know your local AHJ's current adopted code, not just the model standard.
EPA AIM Act phasedown milestones continue to tighten HFC allowances through 2036. Availability and pricing for legacy refrigerants like R-410A will keep shifting as those caps step down. That is an ongoing market reality, not a single deadline.
OEM training and certification requirements tied to specific A2L equipment lines are also being rolled out manufacturer by manufacturer. Some brands already require documented A2L training before warranty support applies. Check before you commission a new system.
What This Means for You Right Now
Get your recovery equipment certified for A2L. Audit what refrigerants you are stocking and what systems you are being called on. Review your leak check and purge procedures against current best practices. Do not wait for an inspector or a warranty dispute to surface the gap.
Haltron stocks A2L-compatible refrigerants and can help you make sure you are set up to work on the systems already showing up on your schedule. Browse our current refrigerant inventory or reach out if you have questions about what you need.
